This Week in Comics – Week of April 1, 2012

Featured Release: American Vampire #25

21292_900x1350

Over the last couple of years, we have had a bit of vampire overload.  Pop culture, fed by properties like Twilight and True Blood, has crammed the blood suckers down our throats.  It’s to the point that some have become completely turned-off with anything dealing with vampires.  If that’s you and you’ve missed out on Vertigo’s series American Vampire, you should really give the title a shot.

The Eisner award winning series focuses on a new generation of vampires, spawned in the frontiers of the Old West.  Each story arc features a different era, a different generation, and a new evolution of vampire.  If you’re reaching back to the original arc, you’re in for a special treat – a two-fer featuring two legendary writing talents.  Scott Snyder, the series’ lead writer as well as the current writer of the epic Court of Owls storyline in Batman, took over one storyline featuring an aspiring Hollywood actress in the ‘30s.  The second storyline, which forms the foundation of the series, was written by none other than horror icon Stephen King.  While King was only involved in the first 5 issues of the series, Snyder is more than a worthy successor.

Issue #25 concludes the current story arc, “Death Race”, and centers on the history of vampire hunter Travis Kidd.  Maybe not the best of jumping-on points for the new reader.  However, with three collected editions going from Issues #1-#18, it’s easy to catch up.

American Vampire, Issue #25, arrives on store shelves today.
