GGOrlando’s Free Comic Book Day Guide

thumbnail7

Tomorrow’s the first Saturday in May, which means one thing to all good comic book geeks:  Free Comic Book Day!  Now’s an opportunity not just to pick up free books, but to bring your friends who may not be into comics to pick up some comics and possibly see what you’re so passionate about.

Orlando is fortunate to have several awesome comic book stores around town participating.  Honestly…  Be thankful – I’ll be spending my FCBD in Tampa, where this list would be much, much shorter.  Each store is hosting their own activities surrounding the event.  Here’s GGOrlando’s guide to FCBD.  Get out there and get some good stuff!

A Comic Shop

In Winter Park, A Comic Shop will be giving away the greatest gift of all this Free Comic Book Day:  free beer (to those 21+, of course).  But, in addition to free comics and free beer, you can pose for photos with costume characters as well as get a sketch by local artist Tony Baldini (Dungeons & Doritos).

A Comic Shop – 114 S. Semoran Boulevard, Winter Park, FL 32792

Acme Superstore

Longwood’s Acme Superstore will be getting things started at 10am with activities throughout the day.  You can meet costumed characters and kids can get their face-painted.  Adults can contribute something positive by donating blood as the Bloodmobile will be parked outside from 11am-4pm.  The store will also be hosting special guests artist Michael Duron (Topps Star Wars and Indiana Jones trading cards) and Christian Slade (creator of Korgi).  In addition, pick up a free drink from Honest Tea.

Coliseum of Comics

Central Florida’s chain of comic book shops will be hosting special Free Comic Book Day events at each of their four Orlando-area stores.

Fashion Square Mall

The downtown location will be hosting costumed characters for pictures from 11a-3p.

Kissimmee

The Kissimmee location will be offering up artist Aaron Conley (Dark Horse Presents) and professional wrestlers from Vintage Wrestling Florida.  In addition, visitors can help design a special cover for the upcoming release of Spider-Men #1 that will be released exclusively by Coliseum of Comics.

Millenia

No special events, but free comics are free comics.  Which is good!

Seminole Towne Center

The Sanford store getting a lot of love.  Meet comic writer and Central Floridian George Perez (Superman) and artist Greg Horn (Blackest Night, Secret Invasion).  Also artists Clay & Seth Mann (Magneto: Not a Hero) and Shawn Surface (Ultimate 7).

Comic Central

Comic Central will be working in tandem with their neighboring stores for some FCBD goodness.  Stop by the Sanford store for Free Comic Book Day and get coupons for Firehouse Subs, TCBY, and Great Clips.  So you can look good with your free books as you get your photo taken with Batman, Joker, and Harley Quinn.

Comic Central – 1425 WP Ball Boulevard, Sanford, FL 32771

Heroes Landing

Clermont’s Heroes Landing will be hosting a slew of geeky talents for Free Comic Book Day, including my new BFF Gail Simone (Batgirl, Fury of Firestorm).  In addition artist Derrick Fish (The Wellkeeper), writers J. Peter Bruzzese (Conversation Geek – in 7 Days) and Mark Miller (The Empyrical Times), and artist Charlie Thurston.  Also, the models of Geeky Pinups.

Heroes Landing – 13248 Roper Boulevard, Clermont, FL 34711

Pop City Comics

If you’re over in the area of the attractions for Free Comic Book Day, Pop City Comics will be the place to hit up on I-Drive.  Starting around 1, the crew from GGOrlando friends Slacker and The Man will be recording a live podcast from the store.  So stop by, pick up your books, and maybe be mocked and ridiculed in front of a live studio audience.  Just say how much you appreciated Chris Evans’ performance in Captain America.

Pop City Comics – 5628 International Drive, Orlando, FL 32819

Other Local Participating Stores

Note that these local shops may also be hosting cool special events for Free Comic Book Day, I just don’t know what.  But they do show on the list of participating stores, so at least you can pick up your free comics.
