If you’re a fan of the webshow The Totally Rad Show, you’re likely familiar with their regular segment Vs. During the segment, the guys are given two movies and must choose which among the two they like the most. In the end, the guys look at what they consider are their favorite movies of all time. The website they use to conduct this poll is Flickchart, and what many viewers may not realize is that the site is locally-grown here in Orlando.
Flickchart was founded in September 2009 by local developers Jeremy Thompson and Nathan Chase. The premise is simple… Flickchart shows you two movie posters and you pick which of the two films you like the best. If you haven’t seen one or both of the movies, just mark that you haven’t seen it and you’re given new movies to choose from. There is no “Skip” selection, so if you’re posed, in my case Raiders of the Lost Ark vs. Star Wars, you have to make a choice (conversely, if I have to choose between Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End vs. The Matrix Reloaded, I still have to make a choice). The more selections that you make, the more accurate your list of favorite movies becomes.
What’s funny is how addictive the website can become. You may be bored and just hop on there and start picking movies, and before you know it an hour may pass by. And then there’s the fun of the incredibly difficult decisions, as you ponder the merits of different movies. My current Top 20 definitely includes some movies I love, a couple I only like, and one I outright despise (screw you Gangs of New York… 5 hours of my life I’ll never get back). But that’s the fun of the website… I often spend time on the website to get a better list of my favorites.
