New Home Video & Video Game Releases – Week of April 29, 2012

Featured Release:  The Walking Dead

Usually, the thought of a “licensed” game brings back nightmares of E.T., Superman 64, and any video game released based on a kids’ movie.  In recent years, Telltale Games has been trying to wash that bad taste out of peoples mouths by producing thoughtful adaptations to classic film series Back to the Future and Jurassic Park.  Now Telltale is trying to work their magic on another licensed game, this time based on Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead.

But if you’re looking for Rick, Shane, and all the characters you know from the comics or TV show, you may be looking for a while.  While the game takes place in the same universe as the other iconic characters, this game will feature it’s own unique cast (though, rumor has it, you may visit places and meet characters that were in the books).  In this game, you play as Lee Everett – a man facing a life sentence in prison when the outbreak starts.  Amidst the devastation, he discovers Clementine – a young girl who has escaped the horde by hiding away in a tree house.  Everett takes the responsibility of taking the young girl to safety.  As you will find in the pages of the comics, you will encounter others who may or may not be all that they appear and allies may become enemies in an instant.  And all of your decisions may affect your chances of survival against the horde.

As with the other recent Telltale games, The Walking Dead will be released in “episodes”.  Released over the weekend was “A New Day” with the additional four episodes being released once per month.  Those who choose to play via Steam or PlayStation have the opportunity to purchase a season pass, a one-time purchase that gives you access to all five episodes the day they come out.  If you’re an Xbox gamer, or would just prefer to purchase the first episode to see if you like the game, the individual episodes will be available for roughly $5 each.

The Walking Dead was released digitally on Saturday through the PlayStation Network, Steam (for PC & Mac), and Xbox Live.
