Comic book weddings are nothing new in the realm of comics, and the annals of comic history include many famous married couples.  However, Astonishing X-Men will feature a first:  a gay superhero tying the knot.  Yes, while DC Comics will have an alternate universe version of the Green Lantern come out of the closet, Marvel will be having one of its established gay characters walk down the aisle.

Northstar may not be one of Marvel’s big-hitters – a mutant and former member of the Canadian superhero team Alpha Flight – but he is of note as one of comicdom’s first openly gay characters.  Introduced in the Marvel U in 1979, and always intended to be a homosexual character, it wasn’t until 1992 – in Alpha Flight #106 – where Jean-Paul Beaubier was able to come out.  Having been in a relationship with partner Kyle since his return to the X-Men title in 2009.

Surrounding this week’s wedding issue, local comic shop Heroes Landing will be hosting a wedding reception for the happy couple – that is if they actually get married (at the end of the last issue, Northstar proposed and Kyle said no).  The shop will be providing cake and sparkling grape juice (I imagine you can sneak in some champagne if you really wanted to) all day today until 7pm.

Astonishing X-Men #51 arrives on store shelves today.
