This Week in Comics – Week of August 12, 2012

Featured Release:  Scalped #60

SCAL_Cv60

I think it was the late, great Triforce Mike who, one day when I was walking around bored at A Comic Shop, introduced me to the world of Scalped.  This week, after 5 years and 60 issues, the series is coming to an end.

The series, which has been the featured release here at least once before, revolves around all-around badass Dashiell Bad Horse and his return to the downtrodden and corrupt Indian reservation where he grew up.  Working as an enforcer for council chief and gangster Lincoln Red Crow.

As I’m a fan of the series, but only read it in trade, I can’t really say what fans have in store in the final issue.  From what I have read about the recent issues, it appears much of the storyline has already been wrapped-up.  And, for all of the horrible things that he has done, there’s something to be said for Bad Horse to get a “happy ending” epilogue.  But, for a book that doesn’t seem to know the meaning of the term, I wouldn’t expect it.

It was recently announced that series writer Jason Aaron is moving off the Rez to the hallowed halls of Asgard as the writer for Thor: God of Thunder, the new Thor title launching as part of Marvel’s new Marvel NOW! initiative.  But, hopefully, his next big independent (yes, I realize Vertigo isn’t exactly “indie”) title is also in the pipeline.

Scalped #60 arrives on store shelves today.
