This Week in Comics – Week of September 9, 2012

Featured Release:  Punk Rock Jesus #3

PKRKJ_Cv3

Punk Rock Jesus is such an awesome idea for a comic that I’m surprised I didn’t hear about it earlier.  But with Issue #3 coming out, it may be time to catch up on this new limited series with an interesting premise.

Writer/artist Sean Murphy posits an interesting question in Punk Rock Jesus:  What if a TV network cloned the DNA found on the Shroud of Turin, bringing Jesus Christ to the modern day, to then be the centerpiece of a Truman Show-type reality show?  Would we get the biblical Jesus Christ, how would he respond to the modern world, how would he react to his new situation, and is he even Jesus at all (no one can say anything definitively about the Shroud of Turin)?

The book was met originally with controversy by Christian fundamentalist groups.  However, it was also met critically with generally positive reviews.  Issue #3 marks the halfway point in the 6-issue series, so this may be a good point to jump on.

Punk Rock Jesus #3 arrives in stores today.
