Featured Release: Assassin’s Creed III & Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation
With games coming out annually since 2007, it’s kind of hard to believe that the Assassin’s Creed series is only up to their “third” game. However, unlike many games, the Assassin’s Creed series takes their numbering a little differently. Each numbered title represents a different time-period the game’s over-arching hero Desmond Miles interacts with, with the help of the Animus.
Today features a double-punch of Assassin’s Creed goodness. First off, we enter the era of the American Revolution through the world of Assassin’s Creed III (PS3 & Xbox 360, coming next month to the PC and Wii U). Gamers take the role of Connor Kenway, a half-English/half-Native American, who takes up his tomahawk to fight off the Redcoats and defend his ancestral lands in the lead-up to the war through the post-Revolutionary period. And Connor takes a prominent role in the key events that create are nation (funny that I didn’t read about that in school). The game will have reproductions of Colonial-era Boston and New York City and will also feature a first for the series – naval combat. Something I’m overly-excited for is the announced DLC ‘The Tyranny of King Washington’, where you confront an alternate version of George Washington who becomes the ruthless monarch of the United States. (Editor’s Note: For the kids who had American History first period and used it for naptime, following the Revolution there was a small minority of people who wanted to crown George Washington king – even though they just fought to overthrow another king.)
Also coming out today is the first Assassin’s Creed entrant on Sony’s new handheld system, PlayStation Vita. Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation also takes place in the Revolutionary-era, but takes place on a different front. Taking place in Spanish-controlled New Orleans, the game features Aveline de Grandpre – a half-French/half-African assassin. The game focuses on a cultural custom of the era in Louisiana, where wealthy men enter into arranged marriages with African, Native American, and Creole women. Aveline will use her social status as the product of such an arranged marriage to help fight against slave runners. The game also promises a slight crossover opportunity, as ACIII’s Connor will make brief appearance in Liberation.
For those of you who own both a PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, you’ll receive some special unique content such as using Connor’s tomahawk in Liberation. If you’re in the market for a PlayStation Vita, Sony is offering a limited-edition bundle featuring Liberation, a white Vita, and 4GB memory stick for $250.
Assassin’s Creed III & Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation arrive on store shelves today!
(Editor’s Note: It’s Halloween, but the list of video games shows the industry is already in Holidays mode. Coming on Friday will be GGOrlando’s Guide to Holiday Games! Check it out! Please …)
