Featured Release: Harry Potter Kinect & Wonderbook - Book of Spells

 HarryPotterGames

Since the Kinect for Xbox 360 and PlayStation Move arrived on the market in the Fall of 2010, each has been looking for a killer app to prolong the life of the device.  After each device launched well (the Kinect is considered the “fastest selling consumer electronics device” of all-time, the Move sold respectfully), the motion-controlling peripherals arrived on store shelves long after the motion-control craze sparked by the release of the Nintendo Wii had died down.  Looking to prolong the lives of the two devices, and to give those who purchased them further justification of that purchase, both Sony and Microsoft are turning to the boy wizard who who lives under the stairs.

Launching today is Harry Potter for Kinect.  The Xbox 360 exclusive is a chance for gamers to take the role of a Hogwarts first-year student entering the wizarding world.  Using the Kinect’s body-scanning technology, you will have the ability to enter the game and create a witch or wizard who looks exactly like you.  Then, you will stroll down Diagon Alley to Ollivanders to purchase your wand and have the Sorting Hat assign you to your house (Ravenclaw FTW!).  You will then learn to cast spells, brew portions, and participate in challenges in mini-games or play games with your fellow classmates in the game’s co-op modes.

Coming in November, Sony’s PlayStation enters the magical world with Wonderbook: Book of Spells.  Wonderbook is a new additional peripheral, which ties to the PlayStation Move.  The “book”, along with the Move, creates an augmented reality, interactive experience which brings the books to life on the television screen.  A seemingly brilliant integration of this technology is the introduction of Book of Spells.  Introduced with a very underwhelming demo during the Sony keynote at E3, the game does look promising.  While the Kinect game seemingly takes place in the same world as the films, Book of Spells – a tie-in with Rowling’s new online community Pottermore – is rooted in the world of the books and includes original content from J.K. Rowling.  Similar to the Kinect game, the new student learns how to cast spells and gain experience, resulting in House Points for your chosen Hogwarts house.

Harry Potter for Kinect on the Xbox 360 arrives on store shelves today.  Wonderbook: Book of Spells the PlayStation 3 will be available starting on November 13th.
