Special Announcement – I Suck

picture000

So, as many followers of this blog may know, I am a grad student at UF.  With just 20 days left until graduation, I am stressing as I prepare for my Finals and getting ready to re-enter the real world.  With that being said, I am taking a brief respite from my duties here at GGOrlando.  The blog will return next week with all new posts.

As always, for upcoming events around town, refer to our GGOrlando Event Calendar which I will continue to update with new events as I receive them.  In addition, with Sunday starting the month of April, it’s time to send in your upcoming events for next month.  E-mail them in to me at grandowl@ggorlando.com

See you next week!

n00bTube – The Hunger Games

MV5BMjA4NDg3NzYxMF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNTgyNzkyNw@@._V1._SY317_

It’s hard to avoid the current marketing campaign surrounding today’s release of The Hunger Games.  However, you may be like myself and only know of the series of books from passing by them in the bookstore.  So what does a bunch of kids taking part in a Battle Royale tournament have to do with being hungry?  Well here’s a primer before you head out to theaters this weekend.

Welcome to Panem

The world of The Hunger Games takes place in the nation of Panem, a post-apocalyptic megastate encompassing the North American continent.  Panem (Latin for bread) is composed of 12 districts and The Capitol and is ruled by a ruthless totalitarian government.  The Capitol lives in the lap of luxury while the 12 districts live in abject poverty.  Following a civilian uprising by the then 13 districts against The Capitol, the government instituted a contest called The Hunger Games.  From each of the 12 districts, one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 to 18 is entered into a lottery to participate.  Those chosen are sent to The Capitol to participate in the annual event.  However, the games consist of the 24 teenagers killing off the other participants until the sole survivor is deemed the champion.  For residents of The Capitol, the games are merely a form of entertainment.  However, to the districts, seeing their children being murdered is a form of subjugation to quell the possibility of another revolt.

Meet the Contestants

The trilogy of novels focus on the character Katniss Everdeen, a 16 year-old from Panem’s District 12 – the poorest and least-populated of the 12 districts which is located in the Appalachian Mountains.  Katniss’ father was killed in a coal-mining accident when she was 11, so in a district struck by poverty, the Everdeen family is the poorest among the poor.  To help feed her family, Katniss becomes an expert hunter in the forests surrounding her community.  At the start of The Hunger Games, Katniss’ younger sister Prim is chosen as District 12’s female representative for the tournament.  Fearing her sister will not survive the trials, Katniss volunteers herself to serve as the female representative instead.  She and District' 12’s male representative Peta Mellark are then whisked to The Capitol and prepped for the games by their district’s mentor Haymitch Abernathy.

Well, I’m sure you can guess who wins – there are 3 books in the series after all – but I’ll stop here so not to spoil anything for those planning to see the film.

This Week in Comics – Week of March 18, 2012

The Best of Mark Waid
mwie_at_meltdown
(Editor’s Note:  Today’s post was originally going to promote today’s release of the final issue of Mark Millar’s run of Kick-Ass 2.  But, for one reason or another, I decided to change topics.  But if you like comics with a super dark and twisted sense of humor, cannot recommend Kick-Ass 2 enough.)
I have mentioned that comic writer Mark Waid was one of my favorites in the industry.  Currently, Waid had brought Daredevil back from the brink of the abysmal Shadowland with a great arc.  Meanwhile, his creator-owned series, Irredeemable and Incorruptible are winding down with an epic showdown.  Here are a few of my faves from the birthday boy:
Incorruptible/Irredeemable
166122_20100810192235_large
What if Superman decided that he had it with humanity and goes from superhero to unstoppable supervillain?  His target, his former superhero comrades.  That is the world of the Plutonian established by Waid in his title Irredeemable.  At the same time, Waid started a second title taking place in the same universe of a former Joker-type supervillain named Max Damage and his quest to become a hero.  In May, both titles will conclude with a showdown between the two.
JLA – Tower of Babel
12535_20051202011733_large
So a couple of years ago I was going through the graphic novel section of the downtown library and come across a cover of Batman standing over the dead bodies of all of DC’s other major superheroes.  The book was the trade paperback of Waid’s run of JLA titled Tower of Babel.  Batman, being Batman, has files on all of the members of the Justice League on how to defeat them should they go rogue.  This information is stolen by Ra’s al-Ghul who then begins picking off superheroes one-by-one, using their individual weaknesses against them.  The basis of the storyline was used in last month’s DC animated film, Justice League: Doom.
Daredevil
231180_20110720160954_thumb
Two years ago, Marvel announced the introduction of the most evil character to ever enter the Marvel Universe.  That character ended up being a possessed Daredevil in the much-hyped and uber-awful Shadowland.  The title left the “Man Without Fear” holding a pity party in the southwest and Hell’s Kitchen falls into the jurisdiction of Black Panther for some reason.  Waid had to pick the character up from Shadowland and did an exceptional job.  Murdock returns to a New York where it’s common knowledge that the blind lawyer is also the masked vigilante, though he and best friend Foggy Nelson constantly attempt to deny it.

New Home Video and Video Game Releases – Week of March 18, 2012

Featured Release: The Muppets

B006JTS5WQ_01_LZZZZZZZ

“It’s time to start the music…  It’s time to light the lights…  It’s time to meet the Muppets on The Muppet Show tonight.”

Like most children of the ‘80s, I grew up on The Muppet Show.  And, I think the show help developed my sense of humor as, to this day, I still love really absurd humor (stuff like the TV shows Community and Archer) and sketch comedy.  So when I was really excited when I heard an interview on the Howard Stern Show when he originally pitched the idea of making a new movie featuring the classic characters.  And, just from the passion he spoke of the property in that interview, I could tell the film wouldn’t just be some corporate pap to help sell some merchandise.

Like many, I was concerned when Disney purchased the rights to the characters, wondering what the House of Mouse would do with the characters I loved so much.  So it was rather surprising that, for the most part, they chose to do nothing with them for so long.  While the film did not score the box office results many expected, it is my hope that Disney will continue with new movies and hopefully a new television show with old and new characters.  One review I read did point out that a few of the characters are straight out of the ‘70s and didn’t necessarily age well.  And while I hold them in high-esteem, I guess I wouldn’t mind seeing some retired or only in cameo appearances.

Anyways, they made a movie…  It was good…  It comes out on DVD and Blu-ray today…  I suggest you buy it, and maybe buy one for me too.

GGOrlando Editorial Special Edition – Coliseum of Comics vs. Mark Waid

So, for anyone who follows comic writer Mark Waid on Twitter, you may know the story already.  Following a post on Bleeding Cool by Coliseum of Comics’ Phil Boyle where he announces that he’ll no longer sell comics by Waid, the writer has fired back by using his Twitter account to promote every other comic shop in the Orlando-area.  I find it funny this went down today (well, I guess yesterday now) as today’s GGOrlando local spotlight was on Kissimmee’s Coliseum of Comics store while Mark Waid is one of my favorite comic writers.

Reading the Bleeding Cool post, I thing Boyle’s opinion is seriously off-base.  To sum up, the post surmises that Mark Waid’s recent announcement at WonderCon that he was selling off his collection of comics to fund a new web-only series is an indictment on print comics and local comic book shops.  However, even the article from the LA Time’s Hero Complex blog that Boyle links to as proof of Waid’s anti-print bias doesn’t even seem to show anything.

In short, Waid announced over the weekend that he intends to sell-off his large collection of comics to fund a new digital-only series that will launch later this Spring.  In it, he mentions that the comic book industry needs to adapt to cater to accommodate the growing digital audiences.  At the same time, he mentions how his goal is to not undercut the local comic book store and that the goal of his projects is to try out new concepts to cater to digital audiences.

In this, Waid is absolutely correct.  As the former editor-in-chief of publisher Boom!, I’m sure he’s intimately familiar with the troubles of the comic book industry and publishing in general.  One only need to look to the magazine industry to see the danger comics are in.  It was only 10 years ago when you could find a magazine covering any niche genre you could think of.  However, the expansion of digital distribution as well as the economic recession – which cut into ad revenue – decimated many magazines.  In addition, the closing of major bookstore chains such as Borders, is also proof of the damage digital is doing to the print industry.  In this environment, it would be stupid for anyone in the publishing business to not experiment in digital.

If this article is the only example Boyle can site, then his blog post reflects poorly on him and his business.  I receive the weekly newsletters from Coliseum and they have taken many an opportunity to express their displeasure with digital.  Unlike local stores A Comic Shop and Heroes Landing, Coliseum does not participate in Comixology’s affiliate program.  It is understandable how owners of comic book stores would fear the threat digital poses.  But his reaction, attacking Waid by misconstruing his comments and pulling his books from store shelves, is indefensible.  While it is his right as a business owner to sell the products he would like, I absolutely feel this public blasting will completely backfire.  In addition, it is precisely this head-in-the-sand, unwillingness to adapt to a changing business environment that has destroyed so many businesses.  I’m an MBA student currently working on a presentation for my Business Policy class about the demise of Yahoo! where.  Lo-and-behold, they stuck their head in the sand when Google emerged – choosing to protect their business of selling banner ads to large corporations instead of adapting to the search-based targeted approach Google developed.  Guess what happened?  Google’s current stock price – $634.  Yahoo!’s current stock price – $15.

Regardless of my personal opinions on the situation, I feel that my role here at GGOrlando is to continue to promote local businesses that support the geek community.  I was considering pulling down today’s post about the Kissimmee store, replacing it with this post, but I figured that would be a disservice to readers in Osceola County who may want to participate in the gaming programs they offer but may have been unaware.  And, Boyle may need to look in the mirror if he’s seeing customers avoiding his stores.  I have heard many horror stories of those who had bad experiences in Coliseum stores and vowed never to return.  It may come from being the “top dog”, but since I started picking up comics again 5 years ago, nobody has made it a point to tell me to stay away from any other store.  Personally, while Coliseum is not my preferred comic shop and thus I rarely go to one of their locations, the times I have – at the one close to my home in Seminole Towne Center as well as near my job across from Mall at Millenia – have been nothing but pleasant experiences.

So, it’s nearly 1:30 in the morning and I’m well beyond the point of rambling.  But, considering the circumstances, I felt it important just to provide my thoughts on the situation.  But too tired to remember why.

Local Spotlight – Coliseum of Comics Kissimmee

PwbndMiZ148

While I try to cover Central Florida in general here at GGOrlando, I do realize that many of the updates here concentrate on Orange or Seminole Counties.  But, I want to show some love to our friends down south in Osceola County.

From the looks of each week’s Orlando Event Calendar, it seems like the hub of the geek community in Osceola County is Kissimmee’s Coliseum of Comics.  Also referred to as the Central Florida Gaming Center, the shop is considered the hub of gaming for the Central Florida chain of comic book stores.  Every day there is at least one organized game going on, and if you don’t feel like playing that, well they host “open play” where you can use one of their tables to play whatever you’d like.

And, being that it is called Coliseum of COMICS, it does have the normal selection of new releases and back issues to choose from.  Located roughly five miles from the edge of Disney’s property on Highway 192, it’s a great place to refer your out-of-town friends to should they be down for a visit but afraid of missing out on their Wednesday comics.

This Week at Generation Geek

Happy Monday, geeks!

Today’s post is written from the greatest place in the world…  My bed.  Just unmotivated to get up.

So lots of cool, geeky stuff came out over the weekend from Wondercon in Anaheim.  Felicia Day and Chris Hardwick released the details of their new YouTube channels Geek & Sundry and The Nerdist, respectively.  Sony expanded the viral campaign surrounding this summer’s Amazing Spider-Man.  Meanwhile, Universal is kind of proving that if they had never said their upcoming movie was based on a board game, Battleship may be worth seeing.

Yay, a Monday update where I didn’t ramble endlessly about some inanity in my life.  Here’s what’s happening this week at Generation Geek:

  • Monday:  Local Spotlight – Coliseum of Comics Kissimmee
  • Tuesday:  New Home Video and Video Game Releases feat. The Muppets
  • Wednesday:  This Week in Comics feat. Kick-Ass 2 #7
  • Thursday:  Orlando Event Calendar – World’s Largest Game of Munchkin

Flame War Friday – The Hate on Anime

    1577811_1305851025640_25res_375_300

An element of geekdom that garners equal parts love and hate is the genre of Anime.  While many of us, even old-timers like me, grew up on Japanese animation.  However, at some point in the development of our geekdom, we hit the fork in the road…  Move up from the kid-friendly shows of Cartoon Network’s classic Toonami to their late night Adult Swim Anime block or turn away from the genre.  And, somewhere else along this line, certain ones become the die-hard anime fans while others develop this intense hatred.  I wonder to myself, where does this come from?  Is it actually the super-passionate fanboys that drive others from apathy to loathing?

Having a family who worked a lot, I was often in school in daycare from 7 in the morning to 6 in the evening.  And, I either went to Catholic school or a Christian day care center, so unfortunately cartoons weren’t a large part of my childhood.  So it took me having a co-worker when I was living in St. Petersburg to bring me into the Anime fold in 2003.  The first series he got me into, Cowboy Bebop, had me hooked.  I wouldn’t say I’m a die-hard, but I am currently watching a couple series and am a weekly listener to the locally-produced Anime Addicts Anonymous Podcast.

So, where does the hate come from?  Here’s a couple of thoughts:

    • Anime Congoers:  It’s not often that us nerds of all genres congregate in one place.  So, when the geekworld combines at events like Megacon, it tends to bring out the best and worst of fans.  For every stereotypical comic or video game enthusiast you see – the socially-awkward, foul-smelling, overweight guy who is probably seeing something other than his bedroom for the first time in a year – there is the equally stereotypical Anime fan.  The stereotype of the Anime fan is teenaged, wearing cosplay from some moe-based Anime with a “Free Hugs” sign and a boombox where they start dancing for no reason.  Fairly obnoxious, but I’m not going to hate on an entire cultural genre based on the actions of a couple.
    • Hentai:  Say you like Anime to someone out of the loop, and two words will come to the mind of many:  Tentacle rape.  Yes, the sub-genre of Anime of Hentai – for those totally uninitiated, Hentai is pornographic animation – has become what many people think encompasses the entire genre.  How did this happen?  It would be akin to people likening Disney movies to those weird pictures of the Disney princesses you find when you turn the Safe Search setting off on Google.
    • Things Were Better When I Was a Kid:  As I mentioned earlier, I didn’t have a relationship to Anime as a kid.  So, it may have been that which allowed me to be more willing to try it as an adult.  When, during adolescence, someone takes the turn from enjoying childhood Anime to the more mature series, there may have been a particular show or a few shows that turned them off.  Then they walk away and maybe give it another shot a few years later and, again, don’t find anything they like.  Which leads to the “Shit was better back in the day” logic.  It happens all the time…  A few friends of mine refuse to listen to modern rock, instead preferring ‘90s alternative rock because nothing nowadays compares.

As with all Flame War Fridays, I’m curious for your thoughts.  If you’re a fan, why do you think people hate on Anime.  And if you are a hater, why?  Provide your comments below.  Meanwhile, I leave you with SNL’s take on Anime fandom from last Saturday’s show with Jonah Hill.

Special Note:  The first time they did this sketch, they said the male host was originally from that most awesome of cities – Daytona Beach, Florida.

Orlando Events Calendar – The Anime Planet Convention

    TAPHeader

Once again, Orlando, we’ve had to go TWO WHOLE WEEKS without a con.  How did everyone cope?  Well, for those who’re fans of Anime, coming off of Knightrokon, the students at the Heathrow campus of Seminole State College invite you to their first annual convention, Anime Planet.

If you do attend the con, don’t forget your Pokedex.  The organizers promise a distinct Pokemon feel for the event.  And, as you participate in more of the con’s activities and events you’ll receive tokens, with the tokens redeemable for fun prizes.  In addition, there will be tables set up for Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon gaming.

And, as you will find at Anime conventions, there will be a viewing room, an artist area, and more.

This Week in Comics – Week of March 11, 2012

    Featured Release: Saga #1

    prv10802_cov

Writer Brian K. Vaughan is, in short, awesome.  His work in Ultimate X-Men garnered him an Eisner award in 2005 and he has written many epic storylines for the “Big Two” including runs in Runaways and Green Lantern.  But, it is his original storylines he’s most known for.  His 2004 series Ex-Machina, about a superhero whose heroics garners him the popularity to run – and win – the mayorship of New York City, garnered him 4 Eisner nominations.  However, it’s his breakthrough in Y: The Last Man which garnered him the most critical acclaim.  The series, with the sole male survivor of a worldwide epidemic, garnered him an Eisner for Best Continuing Series in 2008.  In addition to his work in the field of comics, Vaughan is also an accomplished television writer, having been a contributor to the TV series Lost.

It has been a while since Vaughan has released anything new, which is why today’s launch of Saga by Image Comics is so monumental.  The series promises to be parts Star Wars and Game of Thrones, with a little Romeo & Juliet-style romance to boot.  And, to hook the reader, this week’s first issue promises to be a 40-page, double-sized epic for just $2.99.  And, if comic book review Joey Esposito of IGN is to be believed, it’s well worth the price of entry.

Brian K. Vaughan’s Saga #1 arrives on store shelves today!

New Home Video and Video Game Releases – Week of March 11, 2012

Featured Release: The Guild – Season 5

    GuildS5_dvd-cover-web

I am a huge fans of all things Felicia Day – from her epic Dragon Age series to her equally epic role as saleswoman at Sears.  But something that I always look forward to is her role as Codex, the incredibly cute geeky girl gamer, on her weekly webseries The Guild.

The series, which started in 2007, focuses on a group of gamers who play a WoW-style MMORPG and their adventures in the real world.  Season 5 involved the Knights of Good attending a gaming convention, where Codex inadvertently destroys The Game, Clara enters the world of steam punk, Bladezz becomes a con star, and Zaboo becomes the Godfather of the Con Panels.  And hottie Tink cosplays and is generally hot as hot chicks often are.

Obviously, as a web series, you can find all of their episodes on their YouTube channel.  But hey, support some cool stuff by picking up the season on DVD.

The Guild – Season 5 is now available in stores.

    Local Spotlight – Jessica Tarnate

    jessica_23

The Examiner is a great resource for local news fitting specific interests.  Previously, we have featured two local “Examiners” – Ryan MacDonald and Randy Pence.  Today’s featured blogger – Jessica Tarnate – takes a unique view as Orlando’s Girl Geek Examiner.

One of the founders of A Comic Shop’s Fangirls: Comics Club, Tarnate has been writing for the Examiner for the past month.  Her current feature, about local businesses celebrating National Pi Day, is currently featured on the Orlando Examiner homepage.

For the ladies who follow GGOrlando, her first post on Examiner is a must read…  A Lady Geek’s Guide to Orlando Events.  Even if you’re a guy, the tips in that article make it worth reading.

Tarnate also does a good job of making me look bad.  As a college student majoring in journalism and linguistics, she’s also a mainstay at local Orlando events as well as coordinating Fangirls events.  Meanwhile, I hold-up in my house complaining about writing my lame MBA papers and skipping blog posts out of laziness.

    This Week at Generation Geek

    What’s up, everyone?!

Hope that everyone had a fantastic weekend.  For me, it marked the home stretch of my MBA program as it was the last weekend of lecture.  Next time I come back from Gainesville, it will be as a Gator alum.

Anyways, hope that everyone remembered to set their clocks Saturday night.  I thought about sending out a reminder, but for us geeks time changes aren’t as big of a deal.  Most of our gadgets and such change the time automatically.  But, it means an extra hour of sunlight in the evenings.  Personally, not much of a fan of the daylight savings.  Rather it be light in the morning and dark at night instead of vice-versa.

OK, once again I rambled a little too much in this section of the update.  Here is what’s happening this week at Generation Geek:

    • Monday: Local Spotlight – Jessica Tarnate
    • Tuesday: New Home Video and Video Game Releases feat. The Guild – Season 5
    • Wednesday: This Week in Comics feat. Saga #1
    • Thursday: Orlando Even Calendar feat. The Anime Planet Convention
    • Friday: Flame War Friday – The Hate on Anime

And it’s Monday and I’m writing all of the updates today.  Why?  Because I’m going to be working on some behind-the-scene stuff for full website going live.  That’s right, I’m pushing GGOrlando out of this faux-beta some time in April if it kills me.  But, because of this, you may encounter some weirdness on the website from time-to-time.  Please be patient.

Orlando Event Calendar – Marc With A C at the Sleeping Moon Cafe

    41795_333322093378745_1255270883_n

Fresh off a successful Kickstarter campaign, local singer-songwriter Marc with a C kicks off 2012 with his first show of the year.  Saturday night, at the Sleeping Moon Café, Marc with a C will be hosting a free, all-ages show starting at 8pm.  While all-ages, Marc does promise dick jokes.  And we can all get behind that.

The Kickstarter campaign, which supported Marc releasing his 2007 EP “Normal Bias” on vinyl, received 105% of its goal and still has 3 days left.  The level of fan support is returned by Marc with a C through his epic live performances.  Known for his lively pace, crowd participation, and – well to put it lightly the length of the shows – a Marc with a C show is something that shouldn’t be missed.

Marc with a C will be performing at the Sleeping Moon Café Saturday night, starting at 8pm.

    Featured Release: Manhattan Projects #1

    ImageProxy

One genre that is a personal favorite of mine is alternate historical fiction – taking historical events, altering something slightly, then seeing how history would have changed.  Writer Jonathan Hickman tries his hand once again at the genre with today’s release of The Manhattan Projects.

Hickman, currently known as the writer of Fantastic Four and F.F., has made several successful ventures into the genre with titles like Pax Romana and S.H.I.E.L.D.  In The Manhattan Projects, the team of scientists who developed the atomic bomb work on other secret projects.

New Home Video and Video Game Releases – Week of March 4, 2012

    Featured Release: Mass Effect 3

    thumbnailCAK70F27

Well, no offense to all of the other games that have been released thus far in 2012, but I would say that today’s launch of Mass Effect 3 is the first major blockbuster video game release of the year.  It’s time to return to the helm of the Normandy and fend off the reaper threat as the battle for humanity has come to Earth.

The team at BioWare has been hard at work on this concluding chapter of the Mass Effect trilogy since the second installment released in 2010.  New for this iteration, PlayStation 3 gamers will get in on the action day-and-date with their Xbox 360 brethren.  For those who have played the series, hopefully you have kept the save data on your console as the major character choices you made in the previous installments will have an affect on the personality of your character in this game.

For video game fans, there really isn’t much more I need to say.  This is the first of hopefully a long line of blockbuster titles this year will have in store.

Mass Effect 3 arrives on store shelves today!

    Local Spotlight – Hard Knocks

    invitation

There’s no doubt that gamers love the first-person shooter.  Modern Warfare, Battlefield, and so many more, military-style first-person shooters are huge.  Ever wonder how your skills would rate without enlisting in the Army?  Well east Orlando has your spot with the Hard Knocks combat simulation arena.

Opened in 2007, Hard Knocks was a first-of-its-kind arena where you can play in settings straight out of video games.  When I went a few years ago, the two setups were an office or a warehouse, but since then they’ve added several more environments.  And you don’t fight with the old-school plastic Lazer Tag-type weapons.  The weapons you wield are military-grade training tools, recreations of some classic guns you see pop-up in shooters like the M-16.

If you’re of the lazier sort (or if you nail your knee on the corner of one of the desks like yours truly), Hard Knocks also offers an extensive gaming center.  You can choose from PC gaming rigs or video game consoles and a stage for special gaming events.

For those interested in heading out, Hard Knocks is currently running a special promotion through Google Offers – $15 for an hour of game time in their gaming arena.

    This Week at Generation Geek

    Happy Monday, geeks!

Hoping that everyone had a great weekend.  Spent the good part of my Friday evening downloading and installing the new Windows 8 consumer preview on my laptop.  On the Lenovo Ideapad Y450 I use for GGOrlando stuff (I have an Alienware M11X I use for school stuff and gaming), it took roughly 3 1/2 hours from starting the download to having Windows 8 up-and-running.  Since I had to work most of the weekend, I haven’t had a chance to play with it much.  So, ironically, I mostly use an environment that simulates Windows 7.  Don’t know about everyone else, but I have a lot of problems using the new Windows 8 apps, which will run for a few seconds and then kick me back to the Start screen.

Anyways, enough Microsoft geeking-out.  Here’s what’s happening this week at Generation Geek.

  • Monday: Local Spotlight – Hard Knocks
  • Tuesday: New Home Video and Video Game Releases feat. Mass Effect 3
  • Wednesday: This Week in Comics feat. Manhattan Projects #1

    n00bTube: Dr. Who

    doctorwho_wallpaper_trust_1024x768

Since I started the n00bTube segment, I have mostly concentrated on card & board games.  However, n00bTube can be about any geek-related topic that you may be interested in getting others more involved with.

Funnily enough, hanging out with a group of geeks at MegaCon two-weeks ago and discussion turned to the good Doctor and a couple of us had to provide a crash course in the world of Who.  For those of you out there needing a similar refresher, here’s a primer:

    The Good Doctor

Doctor Who is a BBC program that dates back to 1963.  However, when most Whovians discuss the show, they’re talking about the show since the 2005 revival – notably written by Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat.

    Doctor…  Who?

One running plot point through the series since the beginning is the story behind the Doctor’s regeneration.  Mostly a story element which allows the show’s producers to change the actor playing the Doctor with little disruption to the series.

    Versions_of_the_Doctor

When the Doctor is near death he can regenerate his body to stave-off his demise.  Since the 2005 revival, there have been 3 Doctors: Christopher Eccleston (GI Joe – The Rise of Cobra), David Tennant (Fright Night), and the current Doctor Matt Smith.

Time Lords, and Gallifrey, and TARDIS… oh my!

The Doctor belongs to a nearly-extinct alien species known as the Time Lords.  Time Lords hail from the planet Gallifrey.  Time Lords have the ability to see the past, present, and future of any reality and invented the TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimensions In Space) to help oversee the time spectrum.

    220px-TARDIS1

Only The Doctor’s TARDIS takes the shape of the familiar British police box.  The TARDIS comes with a cloaking device that is intended to help it blend into whatever environment that it sets down in.  However, back in the original episode of the series back in 1963, it is said that the TARDIS lands in ‘60s London and takes the shape of the police box, then has its camouflage mechanism damaged.  Thus, it has kept its distinctive look for nearly 50 years.

    TARDIS_interior_2005

The exterior of the TARDIS hides an expansive internal structure which operates the machine and also serves as the home for the Doctor and his companions.  Thus, the often heard joke between Whovians that “it’s bigger on the inside”.

    The Companion

    karen-gillan

The Doctor often takes a human “companion”, someone who travels the Universe with the Doctor and serves as the viewers “eyes”.  In the current iteration, the Doctor’s current companion is Amy Pond, played by the incredibly beautiful Karen Gillan.  Unfortunately, Gillan and her on-screen husband Arthur Darvill (who plays the character Rory Williams) have stated that this will be their last year on the program.

    EXTERMINATE!

While each episode of the show generally has some type of alien species the Doctor must thwart, two that you often hear about from the Doctor Who Universe are the Dalek (a traditional enemy) and the Weeping Angel, popularized from a more recent episode of the show.

    200px-Dalek_2010_Redesign

Daleks are the most recognizable of The Doctor’s adversaries.  The Dalek is a creature that has every emotion removed from their minds except that of hate.  While the above image is what most associate with the Dalek, that is actually their robotic shell which contains the frail mutated alien which lives within it.  The Daleks mission is to become the dominant lifeform in the universe through conquest, giving them they’re infamous catchphrase “EXTERMINATE!”

    Doctor_Who_Weeping_Angel_from_The_Time_of_Angels

A more recent adversary that has taken on cult status among the Whovians is the Weeping Angels.  Disguised as statues, the Angels feed on the energy of other sentient beings.  However, whenever someone looks upon them, they freeze, giving them the statue-like appearance.  At first considered a one-off villain for the Doctor to face, the Weeping Angels have made several subsequent appearances.

    How to Celebrate Your Fandom

If you’re a fan of the series, or just interested in learning more, Heroes Landing in Clermont will be holding a special event tomorrow called the Who-tenanny!  You’ll be able to see a full-size replica of the TARDIS, participate in trivia and costume contests, and take advantage of specials on Doctor Who related merchandise.

In addition is the local Doctor Who fangroup Hurricane Who.  The group will be hosting their 3rd annual Hurricane Who convention at the Doubletree Orlando Resort in November.

    Orlando Events Calendar – Knightrokon

    knightrokonbadge22

Well Orlando, we’ve had to go a whole 2 weeks without a con.  This injustice shall not stand!  Thankfully, the Anime Spot club over at UCF will end our long con-less nightmare with Saturday’s inaugural Knightrokon.

Fans of Anime, manga, and Japanese culture will be treated to the day-long event.  Among other events will be a video game and tabletop gaming setup, panels hosted by the Propeller Anime Club, and a special edition of the Murder Mystery Host Club.  In addition, con-goers will be able to meet voice actors Kyle Hebert (Dragonball Z) and Wendee Lee (Cowboy Bebop).

Knightrokon takes place Saturday from 10a-7p in the Student Union of the University of Central Florida.
