$20 Pull List – September 2012

Tomorrow starts the month of September, which means it’s time to take a look at next month’s comic book releases for the second issue of the $20 Pull List.  For the new initiates, this takes the model of Rachael Ray’s TV show $40 a Day.  With a budget of $20 a month, I take a look at what comics next month I want to buy!

With DC’s Zero Issues and Marvel’s new initiative Marvel NOW! (NOW!!!), I think that next month I’m going to take a look at some new stuff.  Maybe not new per se, but new to me.

Amazing Spider-Man #693 & #694, $3.99, September 5th & 19th

Yes, I’m a huge Spider-Man mark.  So, of course, I have to get his monthly duo of issues.  In the 50th Anniversary edition, a new member was added to the Spidey Squad…  A new sidekick named Alpha.  While a Spidey sidekick is kinda weird, I want to see where writer Dan Slott takes it.  As he was introduced, it’s implied he may not ending up using his powers for good.

Nemesis 2 #1, $2.99, September 5th

I had my issues with last year’s first-run of Nemesis.  While I thought that the concept, what if a Bruce Wayne-type figure decided to use his wealth and intellect to become a master criminal instead of a superhero, had a lot of potential, the execution was cliché and didn’t live up to what I had hoped.  With all that being said, I’m more than willing to give writer Mark Millar another chance with the introduction of the second series.  Without dropping any spoilers, I wonder if this second series will pick up where the second left off or go with a completely different story.  Because, honestly, if it picks up with the last story I’ll probably drop it after the first issue.

Team 7 #0, $2.99, September 12th

While I never read any of their original series, I am aware of the Wildstorm series Team 7.  However, DC is bringing Team 7 back with this month’s zero-issue.  The title is replacing Men of War, which was DC’s original war series with the launch of the New 52.  Team 7 is a special ops team with superpowers.  So the title is a blend of genres and sounds kind of interesting.

Justice League #0, $2.99, September 19th

While I was excited to see what writer Geoff Johns was going to do with Justice League when he took it over with the launch of the New 52, I was not overly impressed with it and gave up on it after the first story arc.  While he has already been introduced and given a little backstory, the zero-issue for Justice League will provide the origin of Billy Batson and Shazam (formerly Captain Marvel).

All Star Western #0, $3.99, September 26th

Of the DC Zero Issues, the one that I’m most interested in reading is the All Star Western featuring Jonah Hex.  While I’m a fan of Jimmy Palmiotti, the only thing I know of Jonah Hex were the commercials of the awful movie I saw (like most people, didn’t even bother seeing the actual movie).  But I always hear how good the character is and the writing on the title that I am interested in learning more.  And, out of all of the zero-issues, this is a title where I think the concept would work best at (at least for me).

Orlando Events Calendar – Hurricane Who Season 7 Premiere Party

asylum-of-the-daleks-561

Whovians Unite!  This weekend brings the return of the Doctor and his companions The Ponds.  It also brings the return of everyone’s favorite villains armed with plungers and egg-beaters, the Daleks.  In this season premiere, it promises to return the Daleks to their menacing role as the primary antagonists in the Who Universe.

Orlando-area Doctor Who fangroup Hurricane Who is planning a viewing party for the season premiere.  The group, which also is the hosts of the annual Hurricane Who convention in November, also hosts fan events throughout the rest of the year.  This weekend’s viewing party, being hosted at Bloodhound Brew, promises to be an exciting atmosphere – with Who conversations around a couple of pints.

Hurricane Who’s Doctor Who Season 7 Premiere Party will take place Saturday, starting at 7:30, at Bloodhound Brew near the intersection of Conroy & Kirkman Roads.

This Week in Comics – Week of August 26, 2012

Featured Release:  DC Annuals

GLANN_Cv1

With DC’s Zero Month coming in September, DC Comics is taking the opportunity to wrap-up some current threads with a host of Annual issues in their current series.  Today’s DC releases include annuals for Detective Comics, The Flash, Green Lantern, Justice League International, and Superman.

In the Detective Comics Annual #1 – written by Tony Daniel - the Caped Crusader will be taking on Gotham crime lord Black Mask.  Meanwhile, Geoff Johns takes on one of the final issues of Justice League International (possibly ‘THE’ final) in their annual, which promises some Earth-shaking events that will lead into the upcoming Justice League #14.  In The Flash Annual #1, the Scarlet Speedster takes on his classic rogues gallery all at once, with the dark specter of something more sinister lying in wait.  In Green Lantern Annual #1, Hal must face of the wrath of the Black Hand – seeking revenge for the events of Darkest Night.  Finally, Superman is abducted and taken to an unknown world to take part in an intergalactic version of The Most Dangerous Game.

I’ll talk more about some of the Zero Month titles on Friday, but these issues provide a nice endcap to the first year of the New 52.

The DC Annual issues – Detective Comics, The Flash, Green Lantern, Justice League International, and Superman – arrives on store shelves today.

GGOrlando’s Guide to Star Wars Celebration VI

th

Well, the time has finally come…  It’s time for Star Wars Celebration VI – the biggest Star Wars convention in the world.  And, being the Star Wars geek that I am, I cannot be more excited that Orlando will be hosting Celebration once again.

With so much going on this weekend, it would take me forever to cover it all.  And by forever, I just mean…  Well that I don’t feel like doing all that.  I’ve got Star Wars stuff to get excited for!  But here’s the GGOrlando Guide to Star Wars Celebration VI.

How Much Will it Cost?

If you haven’t gotten your tickets yet, well…  It’s going to be pricey.

  • 4-Day Pass:  Adult – $150 / Child – $65
  • Thursday Only:  Adult – $60 / Child – $35
  • Friday Only:  Adult – $60 / Child – $35
  • Saturday Only:  Adult – $65 / Child – $35
  • Sunday Only:  Adult – $60 / Child – $35

Also note:  Parking at the Orange County Convention Center is $13/day.

Panels

There is a ton going on around the con.  Here are some that I personally find interesting.

THURSDAY

  • Fettastic (1:30-2:30p, Chapin Theater):  I think I have gone on many-a-tirade about how I don’t get Boba Fett’s appeal.  However, if you’re one of those who drool over Mandalorian armor, this panel is for you.  Actors Jeremy Bulloch and Daniel Logan and stuntman Dickey Beer – each of whom played Fett – will sit down to discuss their experiences as the character.  They will then each be thrown into a sarlaac pit.
  • How to Make a Video Game with the SOE Development Team (2:30-3:30p, Star Wars University):  For all the would-be video game developers at UCF and Full Sail, this should be an interesting panel to attend.  The Sony Online Entertainment group responsible for Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures will give tips on the game development process.  Plus, if you’re a fan of the game, special perks are available.
  • The Phantom Menace: Ian McDiarmid (5-6p, Chapin Theater):  What is thy bidding, my master?  Yes, by the time this weekend is over, I am quite sure actor Ian McDiarmid will be tired of hearing fanboys come up to him and say that.  But, at this panel, the actor will discuss his role as Emperor Palpatine, aka Darth Sidious.
  • An Evening with Kevin Smith (7-9p, Chapin Theater – Note: This is a separately-ticketed event.):  While Smith was recently here with hetero-life mate Jason Mewes for Jay & Silent Bob Get Old, this is another opportunity to hear Smith tell some of his hysterical stories about his Hollywood life.  In this instance, he promises to have a distinctly Star Wars flavor.

FRIDAY

  • Vocal Stars of Star Wars: The Clone Wars (10:30-11:30a, Chapin Theater):  The hit cartoon series Star Wars: The Clone Wars will be having a “red carpet” premier of the Season Five opener at 5pm on Friday.  However, you have a chance to hear the voice actors talk about their roles on the series at this panel.
  • The Holocron 101 (10:30-11:30a, Star Wars University):  Want to know how they keep the continuity straight between all of the different Star Wars titles to tell one story?  Holocron 101 will feature Leland Chee, the person responsible for maintaining the the Star Wars lore.
  • Mark Hamill (7:30-8:30p, Chapin Theater):  Yup, not much more needs to be said here.  Luke Skywalker, The Joker, Cocknocker.

SATURDAY

  • Talking to Myself with James Arnold Taylor & Date with a Princess with Carrie Fisher (6-9p, Chapin Theater):  A double-header of notable Star Wars celebrities.  First, we get James Arnold Taylor, the voice actor who portrays Obi-Wan Kenobi on The Clone Wars.  Then, at 7:30, Princess Leia herself Carrie Fisher.
  • From World War to Star Wars (6:30-7:30p, Star Wars University):  We all know George Lucas pulled from many different sources to form the basis of the Star Wars universe.  For the Star Wars buff who’s also a history buff, you can see the influence of World War II on the galaxy far, far away.

SUNDAY

  • Why We Love the Prequels (10:30-11:30a, Behind the Scenes Stage):  Here’s a panel I’d like to go to just to punch everyone in the face.  Apparently, they’re going to try to pretend that the prequels have any redeeming societal value and aren’t just a giant tribute to one man’s ego.  Hope the guy who does the Red Letter Media reviews is in the audience.
  • You Call Him Dr. Jones! (12-1p, Behind the Scenes Stage):  The Indiana Jones trilogy (Yea, trilogy…  Meaning three!) is coming to Blu-ray.  The Con is giving over some time to the other massive Lucas franchise, with people who worked on the films hosting a panel discussing their time on the movies.
  • Sam Witwer: The Maul Within (1:30-2p, Digital Stage):  Witwer, who played Doomsday on Smallville as well as Aidan the Vampire on the SyFy version of Being Human, also has a background in the Star Wars Universe.  Witwer was the voice of Starkiller in the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed franchise and is now the voice of Darth Maul on Star Wars: The Clone Wars.  Here, you’ll get to hear Witwer discuss his experiences.

OUTSIDE THE CON

If you’re only spending your time on the con floor, you’re missing out on some of the special events surrounding Celebration around town.

  • 501st Legion Bash (Friday – 9pm, Rosen Centre Hotel)

Well, if you were hoping to spend Friday night with some of Darth Vader’s elite, lo seinto but the party is sold out.  Now, I’m not advocating hanging out in the hotel to see the celebrities pass by.  But…  In addition, who knows, more invites may go on-sale.  I’d recommend, if you’re interested, check out the 501st booth on the con floor.
  • CVI Night at Hard Rock Live with Bonnie Piesse & Seven Years Past (Saturday – 8pm, Hard Rock Live)
    cvihardrockpartyposter
Aunt Beru, in the Star Wars prequels, probably said all of two lines.  So it may be surprising to know that the actress who portrayed her, Bonnie Piesse, is a singer-songwriter.  This “unofficial” after-party at Universal Orlando’s Hard Rock Live will also feature local geek band Sci-Fried.
  • Skill Focus: Burlesque – Chan Shot First (Saturday – 10pm, Sleuth’s Mystery Dinner Theatre)
    sfb_chanshot_11x17
Orlando’s local nerdy burlesque troupe (for out-of-towners, they were ranked the #2 “Best Theater Company” in Orlando by readers of the Orlando Weekly), has planned a special Star Wars-themed show.

Where to Get More Information

There is so, so, so much more going on.  Luckily, Celebration is awesome at keeping attendees connected to make sure they get the most out of their convention experience.

If you have an iOS, Android, or Blackberry device download the Celebration Mobile App at www.swc-mobile.com.  The app includes a map of the show floor, schedule of panels, and a feature that will allow you to plan out your visit in advance and receive notifications to remind you of your next event.

Also, bookmark the Celebration website at www.starwarscelebration.com.  In addition, if you’re a Twitter user, follow them at @SW_Celebration where they will send tweets updating on panels and other events on the con floor.  If you’re at the show, use the hashtag #StarWarsCVI to add to the conversation.

Have a great time, everyone!  Hope to see you there!

This Week in Comics – Week of August 19, 2012

Featured Release:  Star Wars: Darth Vader and the Ghost Prison #4

19799

In my opinion, the Dark Horse Star Wars comic series have been hit-or-miss.  But, being the Star Wars mark that I am, I keep looking for one that will renew my interest in the franchise.  One that’s currently running in print that does just that is Star Wars: Darth Vader and the Ghost Prison – whose fourth issue comes out in stores today.

Set in the early days of the Empire, Ghost Prison centers on Laurita Tohm (with a name like that, you’d assume female…  And you’d assume wrong) – the valedictorian of the prestigious Raithal Academy.  Prior to the commencement ceremony of the first class of Imperial officers, a terrorist attack led by the dean of Raithal attempts to assassinate the Emperor.  Tohm, ever loyal, sides with Darth Vader in saving the Emperor and whisking him to a secret prison formerly run by the Jedi council for their worst criminals.

What’s interesting about Ghost Prison is it takes the story of an average citizen in the days of the Empire and shows why, instead of fearing a disfigured totalitarian and his black-helmeted lackey, they instead revered him for saving the Galaxy.  And, in Tohm, you see the truly human foible of craving power and respect – attempting to raise his profile among Imperial officers.

Star Wars: Darth Vader & The Ghost Prison #4 arrives on store shelves today.  For those attending this weekend’s Star Wars Celebration VI, publisher Dark Horse Comics will have a booth on the show floor.

New Home Video & Video Game Releases – Week of August 19, 2012

Featured Release:  Transformers: Fall of Cybertron

513 x1 arCL__AA300_

The Transformers games, which were based on the movie series, have…  Well…  Well they haven’t been good.  Luckily, developer High Moon Studios decided to make a game outside of the film continuity with the critically-acclaimed Transformers: War for Cybertron.  In these games, you meet the characters in a form before you’d recognize them in the movie and cartoon series.

In the original game, you fought as the both the Decepticons and Autobots as the battle on Cybertron reaches its apex.  In today’s release, the Fall of Cybertron, the home planet of the Transformers has fallen to the Decepticons and the leaders of the Autobots are fleeing the planet.  Like the original, it appears that you will take the roles of both Autobots and Decepticons.  From previews, unlike the original game where you can select which Transformer you’d like to play as, the missions utilize a specific Transformer and is tailored to their particular skill set.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron arrives in stores today.  For console owners, you can test out the game first by downloading the demo on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.

Local Spotlight – Star Tours

Star-Tours-601x410

While I think I covered the new Star Tours in the early days of the website last year, I can’t find it.  And, even if I did, I’m doing it again.  What can you do about it?  Nothing, that’s what!

While it’s the far-inferior movie studio-based theme park in the Central Florida area, Disney Hollywood Studios is home to Star Tours.  Opened months after the opening of the original Disney MGM Studios in 1989, the ride received a major update just last year.  So, all that’s old is new again.

The original storyline had guests making a trip to Endor, and this concept is still showcased in the attractions exterior queue.  Based on an Ewok village, you can hear the drumbeats of the furry creatures as a 1/3 scale AT-AT tries to bust up their Yub Nub festivities.

Once inside the building, you enter the terminal of a distant Spaceport where you prepare to visit a far off planet.  In the first queue room, a maintenance area, you see R2-D2 and C-3P0 working on a Starspeeder.  Take a look up-above and you’ll find a pair of Mon Calamari working in a control room.  The second room is a luggage inspection area.  For those of you who remember the original version of Star Tours, look out for Rex – the Starspeeder pilot from the original ride, now left in a scrapheap.  The luggage inspection droid is a riot, and it’s fun to peer inside the luggage with him.  Also, take a look up in the window as other passengers pass by.

At this point you approach the gates.  I won’t spoil the actual ride itself.  Just note that it’s unlikely you’ll experience the ride the same way twice.  The ride features trips to several different planets which are randomly selected and includes Tatooine, Coruscant, and the infamous Death Star.

Once outside, the surrounding area offers some activities.  In the store you can create your own lightsaber while the younglings can test their skills against the Dark Lord himself at the Jedi Training Academy.

For those of you who rode the ride before the 2011 renovation, it’s mostly the same.  The ride system and such is identical to the original ride, while the digital 3-D and different scenes are epic.  I do miss the original film, which featured the model-based sets from the Holy Trilogy; the new videos utilize the overly CGI animation of the prequels (that includes the Death Star run, which is very similar to the original ride).  But, the differing scenes and smoother ride movement does make the ride a must-do for any geek visiting Disney World.

Star Tours is located in the Echo Lake section of Disney Hollywood Studios at the Walt Disney World Resort.

Orlando Events Calendar–Reign of the Nerds! Best of 2012 Party!

552614_673777788700_1214439214_n

Boy, had we won the Best Local Events Blog in the Orlando Weekly’s Best of Orlando 2012 poll…  I mean I had something huge planned.  Something you would have been telling your children and grandchildren about.  Alas, we didn’t.  It’d almost be cruel to let you know what you could have had.

But, one place that sweeps up in the Best of Orlando’s year-after-year is Winter Park’s A Comic Shop.  This year, once again, A Comic Shop won Best Comic Shop while it’s sister lounge The Geek Easy won Best Kept Secret.  So it’s time to celebrate!  This Saturday night, starting at 9pm, the shop is going to go all-out recognizing their fans for this distinction.  Besides the FREE BEvERages and food, there will be live performances – including personal fave Marc with a C (w/MC Wreckshin at 10p)

So, while we’re at it, let me once again congratulate the “geek” contingent in this year’s Best of Orlando’s.  Hopefully we will make the list in 2013 (we’d better!).

A Comic Shop’s Reign of the Nerds! Best of 2012 Party! takes place Saturday, August 18th, starting at 9pm.

This Week in Comics – Week of August 12, 2012

Featured Release:  Scalped #60

SCAL_Cv60

I think it was the late, great Triforce Mike who, one day when I was walking around bored at A Comic Shop, introduced me to the world of Scalped.  This week, after 5 years and 60 issues, the series is coming to an end.

The series, which has been the featured release here at least once before, revolves around all-around badass Dashiell Bad Horse and his return to the downtrodden and corrupt Indian reservation where he grew up.  Working as an enforcer for council chief and gangster Lincoln Red Crow.

As I’m a fan of the series, but only read it in trade, I can’t really say what fans have in store in the final issue.  From what I have read about the recent issues, it appears much of the storyline has already been wrapped-up.  And, for all of the horrible things that he has done, there’s something to be said for Bad Horse to get a “happy ending” epilogue.  But, for a book that doesn’t seem to know the meaning of the term, I wouldn’t expect it.

It was recently announced that series writer Jason Aaron is moving off the Rez to the hallowed halls of Asgard as the writer for Thor: God of Thunder, the new Thor title launching as part of Marvel’s new Marvel NOW! initiative.  But, hopefully, his next big independent (yes, I realize Vertigo isn’t exactly “indie”) title is also in the pipeline.

Scalped #60 arrives on store shelves today.

New Home Video & Video Game Releases – Week of August 12, 2012

Featured Release: Community – The Complete Third Season

14169867_120629160000

So, time for a little rant.  I have NO IDEA how Big Bang Theory has become the hit amongst the geek community it has.  The show is incredibly condescending and plays up stereotypes as old as Urkel asking for cheese (seriously, when is that crossover going to happen?).  After hearing there was finally a sitcom geared towards geeks, I was excited to watch BBT when it premiered.  Not only did I not like the show, I was ENRAGED by it.  The show literally features the biggest cliché of all:  the nerdy guys getting “pantsed” by the jock-y douchebag.

Meanwhile, a couple channels down the dial and living in near obscurity is a show that embraces the community faithfully and honestly.  It goes down to the old saying:  Big Bang Theory laughs “at” the geeks, NBC’s Community not only laughs with us but often tells jokes that would probably go over the heads of “normies”.

A show about a disgraced former lawyer having to go to community college and his bizarre study group doesn’t overtly seem like it’d have geek appeal.  But this season’s episodes seemingly pay loving tribute to all things geeks are passionate about:

  • Geography of Global Conflict (Episode 2):  When the college has two Model UN clubs, there can only be one explanation, which every comics fan would know…  Parallel universes!
  • Remedial Chaos Theory (Episode 4):  Ever argue with a friend over whose turn it is to get up and get the next BEvERage?  Ever wonder what the consequences would have been if someone else had gotten up?  Well, likely not much would change, but in this episode we see the fallout as the story breaks into 7 different timelines, each dependent on a different member of the study group getting up to pick up pizza.  Evil Abed!
  • Foosball and Nocturnal Vigilantism (Episode 9):  This episode is chockfull of geeky references, including a brief Anime-style animated sequence.  In addition, when his special, limited-edition copy of The Dark Knight goes missing, Abed dons the cowl to discover what happened to it.
  • Digital Estate Planning (Episode 20):  Probably the geekiest of episodes this season, this one features the group having to enter an 8-bit virtual reality RPG to secure the inheritance of one of the gang.

Community – The Complete Third Season arrives on store shelves today.  If I piqued your interest in the series but you don’t have the money for the set – or maybe just want to give it a try first – all three seasons are available on Hulu.

Local Spotlight – Hurricane Who

thCARNSVN9

Mentioned earlier this year here on the blog, Hurricane Who is a local fangroup dedicated to all things Dr. Who.

The local fangroup hosts the area’s biggest Dr. Who convention, which goes by the name Hurricane Who.  This year’s con, titled Category Three, will take place November 2nd-4th at the Doubletree Orlando at SeaWorld.  The featured guest for this year’s edition will be Peter Davison, who played the Fifth Doctor from 1981-1984.

Besides the convention, the group hosts several more community events around town throughout the year.  Hurricane Who hosts “Pub Nights”, where they watch some Who and throw back a few pints at Orlando-area British pubs.  In addition, they are in the planning stages for a sci-fi themed cruise to set sail in 2013.

For more information on the group, check out their homepage or Facebook page.  Details about their upcoming events can be found on both.

Local Kickstarter Spotlight – August

thCAKJEYPI

Each month GGOrlando turns to crowd-funding website Kickstarter for local projects looking to raise funding.  Here’s some highlights for this month.

Down Right Radical T-Shirts

You have just a couple more hours to contribute to this project, sponsored by local creators Wyatt Garland and Jackson Smith.  Down Right Radical is a thrice-weekly (that’s right, thrice…  I got my MBA bitches, I use big boy words) web comic.  This Kickstarter project is to print a line of shirts based on the comic, entitled “Radical Rooster” and “Swamp Demon Sells Ice Cream”.

Cool Kickstarter Reward:  For $30 you’ll receive one of the shirts, a promotional poster and print, as well as get your face in the comic itself.

The Cartoon Art of Mike Deodato, Jr. – Volume 1

So I don’t know if Mike Deodato, Jr., Marvel Comics’

artist-extraordinaire, actually lives in Orlando or has any relationship whatsoever with our fair city.  But his Kickstarter project shows up under our town, and I’m such a fan of some of his work that I’ll go with it.

Deodato, who has worked on Amazing Spider-Man, Incredible Hulk, and Dark Avengers, is using Kickstarter to publish a book that doesn’t feature superheroes and spandex.  Instead, this book will feature Deodato himself as a husband and father and the rigors of family life.  In the description he states how he was influenced by the likes of Calvin & Hobbes, and you can definitely tell from the art style featured on the cover which looks straight out of the Sunday comics.  (Editor’s Note:  Can you believe that Calvin & Hobbes hasn’t published a new strip since 1995?!  That kids under 20 may only know the character from those stupid bumper stickers of Calvin peeing on a sports team/auto manufacturer logo?  Sad.)

Cool Kickstarter Reward:  For $150 you’ll receive a signed copy of the book with a custom sketch featuring the character of your choice.  I’d highly recommend his Dark Avengers-era Moonstone.

Mega Pixel Art

Based out of Lakeland, artist Carlos De Araujo wants to bring his artistic stylings featuring classic video game and cartoon characters to next year’s MegaCon.  However, getting a booth at the con isn’t cheap – and that doesn’t even include having actual wares to sell once you’re there.

De Araujo’s interpretation involves detailing characters down to the individual pixel, then blowing up the pixels so you can see that detail.  The profile page on Kickstarter includes, as examples, Goku from Dragon Ball Z, Mario from Super Mario Bros. 3, Raphael from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Ryu from Ninja Gaiden.

Cool Kickstarter Reward:  For just $20 you receive a desktop wallpaper featuring some of the designs as well as an 18” x 24” glossy print of your choice.

Orlando Events Calendar – Batman: White Knight

187982_250607178391902_1154255066_n

Those philanthropic do-gooders of Gotham City Bruce Wayne and Miranda Tate will be hosting a charity fundraiser this Saturday, right here in our own backyard at A Comic Shop.

The events of last month in Aurora, Colorado were tragic and heart-breaking.  As you could probably see in my This Week at Generation Geek the following Monday, I was so chocked-up and angered by the situation that I could hardly talk about it.  But here’s our chance to contribute to those who were affected by the events of that night as the folks at A Comic Shop as well as several local groups host Batman: White Knight.  The night will include giveaways and costumed characters with proceeds benefiting the victims of Aurora as well as Base Camp, which helps local children battling cancer.

Batman: White Knight takes place Saturday, August 11th starting at 7pm.

This Week in Comics – Week of August 5, 2012

Featured Release:  Gambit #1

detail

So ol’ Remy got the shaft in X-Men Origins, but really who didn’t?!  I know I certainly did.  Maybe Marvel is trying to make it up to Gambit by throwing him an ace, with this week’s release of his own series.

The Cajun bandit was introduced into the Marvel Universe in 1990 and was really allowed to blossom two years later as a starring character on the Fox Kids’ animated version of X-Men.  An immensely popular character, this will be the third solo title starring Gambit following two previous ongoing series that ran from 1999-2001 and 2004-2005.  This new series is being written by X-Men regular James Asmus, who was also a writer on Wolverine, Deadpool, and Generation Hope.

Gambit #1 arrives on store shelves today.

“It must be my birthday!” –Old Man Herbert from Family Guy

Actually, my birthday was in June but if any GGOrlando fans want to get me a late gift, this week is an opportune time.  Some of my favorite movies are coming out on home video.  But I’d be remiss to not feature what would be in my all-time Top 10, which coincidentally came out on my 10th birthday and is celebrating it’s 25th anniversary (guess now you math majors out there can figure out how old I am).

Anyways, it took a couple months, but this week we get the Blu-ray release of Mel Brooks’ tribute to Star Wars and commercialization.  The special edition includes 5 hours of new features including a recent interview with director Mel Brooks.  Unfortunately they edited out my feature on getting grounded by my grandmother after seeing the movie for saying “They shot my hair, you bitch!”

Spaceballs – 25th Anniversary Edition arrives on store shelves today.

Local Spotlight – Epic Comics

epic-web-logo-1

So, I know the area of East Orlando is developing at a rapid pace, but I still think of that area of town as nothing but woods, cow pastures, and Bithlo (Do they still race school buses over there?  That was kinda cool).  Filling in the gap and providing a local comics alternative versus driving into the city is Epic Comics (man, I’m really making East Orlando sound like podunk…  I don’t mean too).

Opened just last year, Epic Comics is located in the Waterford Towers shopping center near 434 and the East-West Expressway.  The store is decked out in artwork along the walls, including prints available for sale.  In addition, Epic offers the latest in comics, games, and collectibles you’d expect.

Next Saturday, August 18th, from 4-7pm, stop into the shop to meet Clay Mann – the artist for this week’s new ongoing Marvel title Gambit.

Wyldes-Card-v2-Back-731x1024

A unique aspect of Anime Festival Orlando is their annual “Interactive Convention Experience” based in the fictional world of Orlandia.  Con-goers have the opportunity to participate in this “real-world” RPG by joining one of the two rival organizations:  NuHelix and the Wyldewood Preservation Society.  By participating in events throughout the con, players will receive a card to be used in a trading card battle-type game.  So, I imagine those cards will become a hot commodity amongst the con.

For more details on the game, visit the Wyldes of Orlandia page or “Like” them on Facebook.

This Week in Comics – Week of July 29, 2012

Featured Release: The Boys #69

prv13114_cov

In comics, you normally commemorate issues divisible by 25:  #50, #75, and on.  But if ever there was a comic that would lovingly acknowledge Issue #69, it’s Garth Ennis’s The Boys.

First published in 2006, The Boys takes a… “unique” look at the life of superheroes.  This team of superheroes are backed by the CIA to handle threats from other superhumans and are given an impunity for their own misdeeds.  OF WHICH THERE ARE MANY!  These guys have reached a certain level of superstardom and fully take advantage of all the benefits such celebrity grants.

The series kicks off with Hughie, a nice bloke with the girl of his dreams on a romantic date…  That is until she’s accidentally flattened into a wall as two superhumans fight.  It is through his eyes that we enter the world of The Boys.  If you’re familiar with Ennis’ take on the horror genre in Crossed, The Boys takes an equally harsh and dark look into the world of superheroes.  While not for the easily offended, if you like to see a different take on the clichéd tropes you see in many, many other comics I would highly recommend at least the first volume in the series (Editor’s Note:  I say that because that is the only one that I’ve read thus far, but I did really like it.)

The Boys #69 arrives on store shelves today!
